Mia and I have been going to Zoe’s in Scottsdale for years and were very excited to learn that one was coming to our part of town. They are at the intersection of Queen Creek and Alma School. This restaurant has Greek/Mediterranean food. Super good. My favorite is the white beans. Every time I go, I get the half gallon of white beans to go. They always laugh. Seriously, the beans are that good. I asked what the secret ingredient is and they told me: rosemary and an olive oil blend. They have lots of other Mediterranean dishes: kabobs, pitas, healthy salads, falafel, etc.
The GM Nicole Matherly gave me all kinds of insider stuff, such as they now have more than 250 locations across the USA. 8 locations in Az. All corporate owned, no franchises. That is what I think makes the consistency so good. She tells me that catering is 30% of their business. You can also dine in or take out. They have a very colorful interior with a lot of “kid” art. Apparently, they work with schools and donate lots of proceeds to those schools. Nice job.
The back story is that Zoë Cassimmus (from Greece, my spelling is questionable) moved to Alabama in the 90’s. She and her husband fell on hard times and decided to open a restaurant. Their philosophy is simple, healthy, satisfying. Their first cook in Alabama is still working there. How about that.
Mia had the chicken kabob, greek salad, rice pilaf and basil hummus. I had the salmon pita and most of hers. Mine came with a harissa red pepper sauce, very good. They attempt a “no preservative” approach. But Nicole did admit that not everything can go the no preservative route.
I asked about the brownies, she told me they are YaYa’s Cake. It’s a scratch chocolate sheet cake that looks and tastes similar to brownies. The secret to their cookies (lemon and choc. Chip) is olive oil and NOT butter. Maybe on the next trip as I ate mine and Mia’s food.
Summary, go and find out for yourself. Yummy good. Big thanks to Nicole Matherly for a great experience once again.
